Skyward

Description: A sculptural seat for Cedar Grove, Banwell Road, Elborough Village, Hutton.

The brief outlined the aviation and aerospace manufacturing history of the site. We sought to combine this with the rural character of the surrounding landscape by way of an oak seat and triangular branch form.

We incorporated smaller stainless steel and bronze elements that refer to the engineering history - a rocket ‘nose cone’ in chromed bronze, and a cast bronze of one of the twin-engined Bristol war planes.

A cast bronze, decorative grille depicting a sun face is fixed within the triangular aperture formed between the jointed timber branches.  Sunlight through the grille casts a shadow on the paved surround, with the sun image referring to aerial flight, and its shadow relating to the title of the former Banwell Shadow Factory.

'Skyward' was commissioned by George Wimpey under a Percent for Art scheme.
