Lead artist for Chorley Borough Council, Ian Randall, approached Diane to design this particular commission. An initial idea was well received but the council decided to change the brief to a millennium theme. After Ian did some initial research Diane redesigned the two bronze relief panels. They are approx. 2 metres square placed on the Cleveland Street side of the market wall on either side of the entrance. The bronzes depict groups of women holding up lengths of cloth. Each cloth have surface patterns based on subjects connected to Chorley and the Market e.g.; Chorley Cakes. The bronze spills onto the ground and the patterns are taken up in mosaic set into the surrounding paving. Mosaic is also set into the bronze relief so that the bronze gradually merges into the mosaic. Tracey Cartledge was engaged to collaborate with Diane and produce the mosaic. See Tracey's site here. |

Tracey and Diane collaborated on the spacing of the mosaic and prepared small pits to take the mosaic pieces in the surface of the clay. They also discussed the colour and shape overall of the mosaic designed by Tracey to be set into the paving. Each 2m sq. relief was moulded and cast into bronze via the lost wax technique by Castle Fine Art Foundry after the artist worked on the waxes. The work has now been welded together and awaits next summer 2002 to be patinated, the mosaic fixed in place and waxed. Tracey has completed the mosaic design which is glued onto hessian and will place it into the prepared wet concrete surface after the bronzes are installed with stainless steel bolts and resin into the wall. |
