Description: Our design takes the form of a series of overlapping 2-metre high screens, comprising sculptural low reliefs constructed from vertical carved oak board. Each screen has a central panel of cast glass, and they are flanked by a third element - clumps of growing bamboo. The imagery carved on both sides of the screens and seen in the modelled sections of cast glass was based on workshops, talks with the clients and staff and our own researches - drawing and photographs in Belfast, the North Coast and Donegal. Viewed from a distance, the bold angular forms dominate, on a closer approach the landscape carved across the wood and modelled through the glass comes into focus. The bamboo provides an aural element reminiscent of the sea. The changing daylight continually alters the appearance of the relief work, which will be dramatically illuminated by coloured lighting at night. Photograph by Paul Warwick |

Photograph by Nora Gaston Production Method: Phil designed the overall form of the screens, the fixing details and the bamboo planting. Diane designed the surface imagery which Phil sometimes modified.
Paul Wigley constructed the screens from Dean Oak with Phil’s assistance.
Phil carved the relief work, Sandra
Photograph by Nora Gaston Diane modelled the clay reliefs and cast them in wax from moulds made by Castle Fine Art Foundry which were then cast in glass by Jackson Fawkes. Galvanized fixings fabricated by Senior Steel. Installation was by Chris Butler Director of Castle Fine Arts, Phil and on site help from the contractors. We hope to have created a sculpture that provides a constant source of contemplation for clients, staff and the general public. |
