Flora's Garden

Floras garden - front viewDescription:
Commissioned after extensive preparatory community work by RBWM’s Arts Officer and Sustrans’ Commissioning Agent, and through an exhibition of the three selected artists, a presentation day and further interview, after all proposals were submitted.

Our proposal consisted of a Portland stone sculptural seat and drinking fountain incorporating a large carved head of a girl ( a maiden’s head ) with a ‘marble run’ play feature in her hair. The stainless steel drinking fountain is placed in a flower carved on the side, it is positioned so that her head protects people sat on the seat from being splashed by those drinking.

A profile cut steel archway and screens are sited in front of ‘Flora’ the poles of the archway support the screens and also carry the two lights the bulbs of which are set in steel openwork in the form of flower buds. There are two decorative steel cycle racks and a figurative bronze relief that covers the stoptap chamber. Phil designed the circular paving and we suggested planting for the perimeter of the site.

Close up of Flora's faceProduction Method:
The stone was brought to our studio where Phil hand carved it (after the initial stage of using an angle grinder to rough it out & a drill to create a hole to take the tubing for the stainless steel drinking fountain). Deb Hughes assisted with carving detail.

It was sited and fixed to the concrete base, where the local people also worked on the carving, under Phil’s supervision. Various groups helped Diane with the design of the steel arch, screens and cycle racks on a plant and wildlife theme. She composed the final to scale design and a full size enlargement was used as a template by Acorn Fabrications who cut, assembled, painted and sited the steel work and arranged for the electrical connection for the lights. The planting and paving were undertaken by the council’s contractors.
