Aspire, Wolverhampton

Philip Bews Diane Gorvin
Sculpture for public sites

Wolverhampton, Science Park
Commissioned by Wolverhampton, Science Park

Materials - stainless steel, cast glass, lighting and water. The 5m tall spire sculpture is formed from stainless steel, hollow box, square section lengths and clad with stainless steel panels fabricated by ABR.

Internal lighting provides brilliant points of colour which can be seen through the spiral designs perforated in the stainless steel sheet. The pierced designs show the mathematical Fibonacci sequence, and spiral shells demonstrate the formula that nature observes.

The light also shines up through the cast glass face and apex elements cast by Jackson Fawkes. A curving ‘S’ form, made from copper tube, patinated green, wraps around the top half of Aspire. The sculpture is sited in a pool next to the new ‘SP/ARK’ Creative Industries Centre in the Science Park.
